Rail networks as strings

Every route is a string, tuned by its length. The trains on the map are where they are right now, in Finland, Sweden or Norway. When one crosses another line or leaves it at a junction, that string sounds; when one reaches a station, its own line sounds softly. Longer routes play lower. The harmony moves on the hour, local time. Trains running late drag behind the beat and drift out of tune. Cancelled trains leave only a click.

Every route is a string, tuned by its length. Static plays back a recorded day in Austria, Germany, the Mexico City metro, the Netherlands or Switzerland, on a clock you can pause, speed up and scrub. When a train crosses another line, that string sounds. Longer routes play lower. The harmony moves every hour. On-time trains land on the beat and in tune. Late trains drag behind and drift out of tune. Cancelled trains leave only a click.
